Happy 30th Anniversary Mahncke Park

July 01, 2009

The Mahncke Park Neighborhood Association (MPNA) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

Started in 1979 by a small group of intrepid individuals committed to enhancing the quality & safety & sense of community within their neighborhood, the MPNA has distinguished itself by creating the first neighborhood plan approved by City Council, effectively working to re-open Lamar Elementary School, obtaining millions of dollars in street, sidewalk, & drainage improvements from the City, successfully obtaining the first funding to bury overhead utility lines on a residential street in San Antonio, working with public agencies to plant dozens of trees throughout the area, establishing foot patrols to discourage prostitution in the 1980's, working to establish Broadway as the first inner city scenic corridor and to be included as part of the River Improvement Overlay zone, diligently pushing for appropriate development to protect and enhance the quality of life for the area, and publishing a neighborhood newsletter every month for 30 years.

A 30th anniversary celebration is being planned as part of National Night Out in August. Stay tuned.
