S.A. Independent School District (SAISD) trustees have been presented a community task force's proposal for long-term school closures, consolidations, & conversions due to decreasing enrollment across the district.

Lamar Elementary School is one of the 16 schools on the list. Lamar is located at 201 Parland Place and has experienced declining enrollment for several years; this year's enrollment was 270. However, Principal Venus Medina attended last month's Mahncke Park Neighborhood Association (MPNA) meeting and stated Lamar would be open for the upcoming school year, beginning in August.

Efforts by the MPNA in the 1980's resulted in SAISD reopening Lamar as a mainstream elementary school, thus ending the need to bus area children out of their neighborhood to attend public school.
